Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United after an 18-month exile, and he is not planning to ask for the No. 10 shirt. The Sun reports this stance is out of respect for Matheus Cunha.

He is expected to take the newly vacant No. 14, the number he wore in Spain during his Barcelona loan following a spell at Aston Villa.

Rashford made his first United appearance since December 2024 in last Saturday’s 4-2 pre-season defeat to AC Milan in Poland, coming on in the 60th minute. He wore No. 9 in that match, which is not his official squad number for the season.

Michael Carrick has confirmed Rashford will be part of the first-team group this season, but stressed he must rebuild trust with the staff and supporters to win back a regular place. The forward has previously won two FA Cups, two EFL Cups, the Europa League and the Community Shield with United.

Wayne Rooney said: “It’s such a strange one with Marcus because we know he’s got the ability, he’s shown that.” Speaking on Stick to United, he added: “For me, has he got the hunger? Does he want to play for Man Utd? If he wants to play for Man Utd, the first thing he has to do… I’ve been there in 2010 when I asked to leave the football club, there’s a stage where you have to rebuild.”

Rashford returns from an impressive year at Barcelona, where he produced 14 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances and helped win La Liga. United begin their Premier League campaign away to Hull City on August 22.
