Marcus Rashford insists he can reach his “maximum potential” after England boss Thomas Tuchel said the forward has to “prove himself” to make next year’s World Cup squad.
The 27-year-old revived his flagging career during a half-season loan spell at Aston Villa before joining Barcelona on loan from Manchester United this summer.
With seven goal involvements in ten appearances for Barça, Rashford‘s form earned him a Three Lions recall from Tuchel in September and again this month as the team secured qualification.
The German tactician warned this week that Rashford cannot rest on his laurels and needs to maintain consistency to reach his “very, very high” potential.
“He can be one of the best in the world because of the quality I see in training, the finishing with both legs and with the head,” Tuchel said.
“He is explosive, he is fast, he is strong in the air, so where are the limits? There are no limits — but the numbers don’t reach the potential.
“He needs to push himself into goal involvements, that means goals and assists, it is as easy as that. [Consistency] is the headline for him. To keep on pushing himself to the limit. I think the limit for him is very, very high. Maybe higher than for others. He has the potential but potential is a dangerous word with high-level sports.
“You have to reach your personal best on a regular basis, that is what is demanded on this kind of level and that is the challenge for him. It’s not a question of talent, it’s a question of whether he can prove the point at club and international level. This is his task, whether he starts for us or comes off the bench, he has to constantly prove himself.
“He still has to make these decisions. He is still in that moment, he is still young enough to take the right decisions and not let go. Because otherwise he will be disappointed in ten years at what could have been and what he made of it.”
Rashford said on Tuesday that he will again reach the heights of 2022/23, when he registered 22 goals and six assists during an astonishing six-month run for United. He ended that campaign with 34 goals and nine assists for club and country.
“When I reach my maximum potential, that will be the best version of myself,” he said. “I’ll also be happier, and I believe it will be a version that I’ve already seen and felt before in my life.”
