Marcus Rashford’s hopes of sealing a permanent move to Barcelona are reportedly slipping away, with a new development strongly suggesting a deal will not happen.
Since joining Barcelona from Manchester United during the summer transfer window, Rashford has enjoyed a rich vein of form.
He has notched an impressive six goals and eight assists in 18 appearances across all competitions, emerging as one of Barcelona’s most important players this season.
Although his outstanding performances would normally make a permanent move a formality, it’s understood that the Blaugrana have yet to reach a final decision. Barcelona have the option of retaining Rashford permanently for around €30m (£26m).
Hansi Flick’s side are thought to have reservations about Rashford’s age and whether he is a good long-term fit for the sporting project at Camp Nou.
Now, Sport have issued an update, confirming that the 28-year-old’s future is “uncertain” and Barca have already started looking at potential alternatives for him.
Journalist Alfredo Martinez told the newspaper, “The decision regarding Rashford’s future has not yet been made.”
“There are voices for and against (his staying). Some don’t want him to stay because Rashford isn’t the type of player who presses high, and besides, he has a very high salary.”
On Barcelona looking at other options, Martinez noted, “Barcelona is looking, among others, for a left winger, a player to provide cover for Raphinha.”
RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa, Malick Fofana of Lyon and Cologne star Said El Mala are all on Barcelona’s radar.
“The other day there was a meeting of agent representatives in Milan, which João Amaral, now Deco’s right-hand man, attended. He was there watching the Italy-Norway match, where Antonio Nusa, an extraordinary talent of only 20 years old, played.”
Martinez added, “Barcelona has also been following Fofana, a winger for Olympique Lyonnais, and is monitoring Said El Mala, another fantastic winger who has already broken into the German national team and plays for Cologne.”
Rashford parting ways with the Catalan giants at the end of the season has also been described as “the most probable scenario” by The Athletic.
