Enzo Maresca’s pre and post match press conferences are fascinating to watch at the moment because there’s just so much to get through.

He’s less than a week in to the season, plus the transfer window is still open. So there’s full scope for questions about transfers in, transfers out, unhappy players, training sessions, tactics and team selection – you name it. There have once again been major changes at Chelsea all summer, and things aren’t ready to calm down yet. Maresca was questioned again today about the club’s plans to bring players in, and once again he didn’t rule out a potential addition in the form of a top striker.

“We will see. If we have the chance to bring in a nine that can help us and make the difference, then we are going to try,” Maresca explained.

“We don’t need to sign players just for [the sake of] signing players. If we sign players that they are going to help us to improve, for sure we need players. Otherwise, we are happy in the way we are.”

Nicolas Jackson in preseason training.

Chelsea unsure on which way to go with striker plan

Chelsea are in a slightly curious situation where Nicolas Jackson looks fantastic but also flawed, and certainly in need of support. He’s too good to be number two, but not enough to be number one on his own yet. That’s led to a slightly confused set of targets.

It should also be noted that Maresca is clearly keen on the idea of a strikerless formation being on the cards too. He’s spoken about Christopher Nkunku and Pedro Neto in that position, and we also saw Cole Palmer used like that for a period last night. Joao Felix is another attacker who could be considered in that role.

if a new player doesn’t come in, expect to see more and more experimentation in that direction.
