Enzo Maresca called Liam Delap’s red card against Wolves “embarrassing” despite winning the match in the EFL Cup.
The striker has been out with a hamstring injury since the beginning of September, but made his first appearance since the injury for the Blues in their 4-3 win over Wolves.
However, his night did not last long after receiving a second yellow card for a second foul in the 86th minute meaning he will miss Chelsea’s trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.
His manager called the red card “embarrasing” after the match.
“It’s embarrassing when it’s a red card like today,” he said. “Two yellow cards in seven minutes. We can avoid both. It’s not good.
“Absolutely, yes. A stupid foul. He deserved that. I can understand the red cards against Brighton and United, but against Nottingham and today, we can avoid that.”
Chelsea started the match well cruising to a three-goal lead in the first half. However, Wolves managed to get back into the game with three goals after the break to make for a nervy end to the tie.
“Very happy first-half, very unhappy second-half. This is my personal view. We were very good first-half, playing nice football and creating chances. We didn’t concede anything.
“Second-half, we weren’t doing the right things. The three goals we concede, we can avoid all of them. For sure, today we had a very stupid red card that was completely unnecessary.”
