Enzo Maresca says Manchester City are still waiting for an apology over Bruno Fernandes’ controversial goal in the Manchester derby three years ago following criticism of the decision to allow Erling Haaland’s winner against United on Sunday.

Haaland’s goal in City’s derby victory was later acknowledged as an officiating error, but Maresca pointed to Bruno Fernandes’ goal back in 2023 as evidence that such decisions can go both ways.

“We acknowledge that there was a mistake and that’s all,” the City boss said.

“I think sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it goes against you.

“Three years ago when I was here, it happened exactly the same against Manchester United, we lost the derby there. The goal was not a regular goal, if you remember, and to be honest, no one apologised.

“We are still waiting for the apology for that goal.”

Maresca also hit back at the focus on the Haaland incident, arguing City’s performance deserved more attention after they played much of the game with ten men.

“Sometimes it happens for you, sometimes against you, it’s football,” he added.

“Talking about one episode, one moment, after that game when we played for 70 or 75 minutes with ten players, I think it’s quite poor.

“I think the performance was unbelievable.”
