Maricá’s city hall, using its Sovereign Fund, signed a non-disclosure agreement as it explored a potential purchase of Vasco’s SAF. According to Globo.com, the NDA let the interested fund review clauses and documents.

Vasco face Maricá on Thursday in the opening round of the 2026 Campeonato Carioca. The match is at São Januário, kick-off 21:30.

Mayor Washington Quaquá, of the PT and a Vasco supporter, floated in 2025 the idea of using the city’s investment fund to back the club. Former player Bismarck brokered conversations between Quaquá and Pedrinho.

Any proposal above half of the fund’s value, which stands at a little over R$ two billion, would require a citywide referendum, so all residents, not only Vasco fans, could approve or reject it.

In April 2025 he posted that, if Vasco agreed, he would commission a serious study. He argued it would boost the city’s image and that building the country’s largest player development centre could repay the outlay within 10 years.

A Municipal GDP study for 2022-2023 put Maricá’s economy at R$ 134 billion, around one percent of the national total. The Sovereign Fund had about R$ two billion available for investments in 2025 and remains at a similar level now.
