Marie-Louise Eta made history when she became the first female to coach in one of Europe’s top-five men’s leagues last week. For the 34-year-old, it wasn’t a new experience as she revealed in an exclusive interview with Bundesliga.
“I experienced this around two years ago, so the situation is not a completely new one,” Eta referred to the time she was handling media duties when Nenad Bjelica was suspended for three games during the time she was serving as one of Union Berlin's assistant coaches.
“We expected that there might be a bit more coverage. I noticed how many cameras were set up, but it was still a little bit surprising to me,” Eta said about the growing interest in covering Union Berlin following the trailblazing news.
“It is clear when you take on a role like this that you will be seen as a trailblazer or a role model. I am aware of this, and I know that this also takes on a role in the wider public. For me, the important thing is what happens on the pitch, and it’s ultimately about the football.
“I’m aware of my role, and it would be nice if it led to one or two more doors being opened. Ultimately, I'm here with the team and the coaching staff to win football matches, and that is the most important thing.”
Union Berlin’s president Dirk Ziegler has confirmed that there will be no changes regarding the initial plan of appointing Eta for the women’s team for next season. This will rule out the possibility of the Dresden native getting the job for the men’s team permanently.
“It’s great how Union have supported and developed women’s football in the last few years. It is nice that it has taken on a higher standing in the club,” Eta said in the interview with Bundesliga.
“In terms of my personal position, I think that’s independent of gender. It should be about the performance. Whether the person is male or female, it should not be about making a point but rather that this person is the best person for the role.”
Union Berlin will next face RB Leipzig at RedBull Arena when matchday 31 commences on Friday night.
