Mario Hermoso has taken center stage for Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma, starting in the opening-season victory against Bologna.

A clear change of heart for the Spanish defender, who initially seemed destined to leave the capital, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Giallorossi coach instead decided to focus on him, praising his professionalism and dedication: Hermoso, despite a four-month injury layoff, never missed a training session, demonstrating determination and a desire to regain space.

Gasperini deployed him on the center-right, using his left foot to build the play and accompany the team in the build-up phase, an integral part of the new tactical setup.

The choice paid off: Hermoso won the ballot with Kumbulla, played the entire match, and received enthusiastic applause from the Olimpico, a stark contrast to the boos that had accompanied some of his performances last year.

After a season limited to just 13 appearances and few minutes on the pitch, the Spaniard now seems to have been revalued and reintegrated into the Giallorossi project.
