Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina netted his very first Champions League goal on Tuesday, March 10. The Galatasaray player opened the scoring against Liverpool FC in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Mario Lemina is on the scoresheet for the first time in the Champions League. He broke the deadlock against Liverpool this Tuesday in the first leg of the round of 16. As early as the 6th minute, Galatasaray found the breakthrough from a set piece. Off a well-delivered corner, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen flicked the ball on at the near post. Alert in the area, Mario Lemina headed home to beat the Reds’ goalkeeper and hand the Istanbul side the lead.
This goal gives the Turkish side the perfect start to this first leg against one of European football’s powerhouses.
This goal carries special significance for Lemina. It is, in fact, the Gabonese midfielder’s very first goal in Europe’s elite club competition. He finally gets his name on the scoresheet in his 24th Champions League appearance across all seasons. Before joining Galatasaray, Lemina had already featured in the competition with Juventus FC.
This season, the Gabon international is making his 8th Champions League appearance for Galatasaray.
