Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flekken shared a laugh with a Danish reporter at a Wednesday UEFA Champions League press conference. The 32-year-old recently returned to German football following a two-year-hiatus with Brentford in the Premier League. Now that the former SC Freiburg man is back in the Bundesliga, he’s also back working under a Danish head coach.
Flekken spent two years under Dane Thomas Frank at Brentord. Ostensibly, Flekken was meant to work under his fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag at Leverkusen. After ten Hag’s sensational early sacking, Flekken now finds himself working under Frank’s Danish compatriot Kasper Hjulmand. The Danish reporter posed a question that elicited quite the chuckle from Flekken.
“It seems like Danish head coaches keep following you,” the reporter noted. “Can you give an impression of how you see us?“
“I thought I finally got rid of one Danish coach and now the next one is already there,” Flekken joked. “I had a very good experience with Thomas Frank at Brentford. After the club [Leverkusen] signed the coach [Hjulmand], I learned that they [Frank and Hjulmand] are very close.”
“This is already noticeable on some of the principles he wants us to implement on the pitch,” Flekken continued. “Things that I’m very comfortable with. That helps with the new start with a new coach and makes it easier. So I have a very good impression of Danish people.”
