Speaking in the mixed zone (via @bayer04xtra), Bayer Leverkusen’s Mark Flekken has reacted to the club’s draw in their opening Champions League game.

Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Copenhagen on Thursday evening. Die Werkself had to come from behind twice to rescue a point in Denmark. First, thanks to another Alejandro Grimaldo free-kick, before a late own goal saved their blushes.

On the performance, Flekken said:

“We can be happy with the point in the end. The intensity wasn’t right in the first half. What we showed on the pitch last Friday, we definitely didn’t see again today in the first half. In the second half it was better. Then you come back, once again through a great free kick from Grima. Then it’s good, then it’s the right attitude to push for the 2-1, because of course you want to win the game, but you can’t open up at the back like that. You have to be much more careful about the counterattacks. That’s exactly where the guys here at FC Copenhagen are really strong. Luckily we came back again to 2-2. But if they had played [the chance] at the end of the game out a little better, then you still lose.”

During the game, the 32-year-old made five saves (via FotMob) to keep out Copenhagen as Leverkusen struggled at the Parken Stadium.

This was Leverkusen’s second game under head coach Kasper Hjulmand, so, naturally, the club is still getting used to the Dane and his style of play. However, in both games, they have had to rely on the quality of Grimaldo to rescue them. This is not sustainable, and the other players will need to step up in the coming games.

On Saturday, Leverkusen play Borussia Mönchengladbach, the other team that has sacked their manager in the earlier stages of the Bundesliga season.
