Mark McGuinness has thanked the Sheffield Wednesday fans for the support they’ve shown him, as he wished the club well in their push for promotion following his return to Cardiff City.

The centre-back joined the Owls in the summer on a temporary basis and quickly established himself as one of the top performers in Darren Moore’s side, starring to help Wednesday to the automatic promotion places.

Unfortunately for the League One side, McGuinness’ form caught the eye of his parent club and it was confirmed this week that he had been recalled by the Bluebirds for the remainder of the campaign.

So, his focus will now be on the Bluebirds but the player sent a message on Twitter to those connected to Wednesday following his exit.

Thank you to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday. Appreciate the amazing support over the last 6 months and best of luck with rest of the season.”

Moore is expected to go into the market as he looks to bring in a replacement for McGuinness, as he looks to ensure his squad is ready to cope for the run-in as they chase promotion.

The verdict

This is a nice message from McGuinness and the Wednesday fans will appreciate everything he did for the team in the past six months.

He was a reliable, consistent performer and those displays were key to putting the Owls in the excellent position they find themselves in.

Now, it’s down to Moore and the recruitment team to find a replacement, and that won’t be easy because whoever does arrive will have some big boots to fill moving forward.
