Mark McKenzie an alternative for Mainz if Sepp van den Berg deal falls through

Sky Germany reports that Mainz are beginning to look for alternatives in the case that their pursuit of Sepp van den Berg fails, with Genk’s Mark McKenzie an option.

The American is one of several candidates for whom Mainz could move if they fail to bring van den Berg back to the MEWA Arena. Mainz cannot afford the €25m price tag that Liverpool have placed on van den Berg so they are trying to bring the 22-year-old back to the club on loan again after he spent last season there.

However, a move is difficult to realise. Several other Bundesliga clubs are interested in van den Berg with some of these clubs being able to afford the necessary price tag.

So Mainz has begun to look at other candidates, with McKenzie being one of them. The 25-year-old is open to moving to the Bundesliga and has attracted interest from other clubs, but at the moment any interest from Stuttgart is not concrete.

McKenzie’s contract at Genk expires in 2025, meaning this would be the last summer that the Limburg club could sell the defender for money. The fee will likely be around €3-5m.
