Mark Robins reveals January interest in Coventry City player | OneFootball

Coventry City midfielder Liam Kelly was the subject of interest from other clubs during the January transfer window, according to manager Mark Robins who revealed this information to Coventry Live.

The Sky Blues have been very busy in the transfer market this season, with the sales of key players and backing from owner Doug King allowing Robins to strengthen his team.

With Gus Hamer one of those key players departing, others have needed to step up in the middle of the park, with Ben Sheaf performing particularly well and receiving plenty of praise for his displays on social media.

Others including Josh Eccles have also stepped up - and Victor Torp has made a good impressing during the early stages of his time at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Torp, who arrived from Sarpsborg 08 last month, scored an excellent goal away at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.

That was a real statement of intent, and as a goalscoring midfielder, he could be an excellent long-term replacement for Hamer who left for Sheffield United during the summer transfer window.

Fellow midfielder Liam Kelly played a big part in the Sky Blues' rise from League Two, but he has also struggled with injury problems in recent years.

Making nine competitive appearances this term, all of these displays came during the early stages of the campaign.

Despite not having the chance to put himself in the shop window ahead of the previous window though, he still attracted interest.

That's according to Robins, who told Coventry Live: "There was quite a bit of interest in Kels, to be honest, and he was quite happy to stay. He wasn’t in any rush to move.

"He backs himself all the time. He’s fit and available and he will, clearly, get an opportunity now and he’ll certainly be on the bench.

"And at some point he’ll get in the team, and once he gets into the team we know what Kels is like.

"So he’ll be waiting for that and relishing that opportunity when it comes along, whenever that is, and he’s good to have around, that’s for sure."

Although he hasn't played much recently, Kelly is still a valuable person to have both on and off the pitch.

Off the pitch, he could be a crucial leader during a competitive battle for a top-six spot.

There was a lot of movement at Coventry in the summer with key players leaving and plenty arriving, so having a stable figure like Kelly could be priceless for Robins.

And on the pitch, he could provide some much-needed depth.
