Celtic have asked Mark van Bommel to succeed Brendan Rodgers after parting with the Northern Irishman last Monday, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

Celtic appointed Martin O’Neill on an interim basis after Rodgers left the Parkhead club, and Van Bommel has been approached by the Hoops.

However, the 48-year-old Dutchman has told Bhoys he has no plans to return to management right now for family reasons.

Rangers were also linked with Van Bommel, who won the Belgian Pro League, Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup with Royal Antwerp in 2023.

However, they ended up appointing Danny Rohl and talks were not held with the Dutchman.

Van Bommel could have been open to taking the Hoops job but he wants to stay close to his son, Ruben van Bommel, who is currently recovering following a cruciate ligament surgery.

The PSV Eindhoven winger could be out for many months, and his father wants to support him during the early months of his recovery.

However, Van Bommel is not ruling out returning to the dugout next season.

Clubs from the Middle East have also approached him, but he could prefer to remain in Europe, and he could be ready in the coming months if the Celtic job is still available heading into 2026-27.

The Hoops insist O’Neill is only a temporary solution, but they could give him the job until the end of the campaign if he keeps impressing.

The 73-year-old started his second stint with a 4-0 victory over Falkirk at Celtic Park on Wednesday before helping them reach the final of the Scottish League Cup following a 3-1 win over Rangers on Sunday.

They return to action on Thursday when they visit Midtjylland in their fourth game of the Europa League campaign, and a win would come in handy as they eye a place in the knockout stages.
