Marlon Freitas opened the scoring in Quito as Palmeiras reached the Libertadores semi-final on penalties despite a 3-2 loss to LDU, then dedicated the goal to his late mother.

The player said in a post on Thursday that the strike was for Nadjara Rodrigues, who died two months ago.

He wrote that although people may see him smiling, he still feels broken inside. The pain is great, he added, but he remains on his feet for the family and will honour a promise to look after them and keep fighting.

Freitas vowed to fight for them every day and said her love, strength and lessons would live on in him. He wrote that he would love her forever.

Nadjara attended his Palmeiras unveiling on 8 January alongside seven other family members. That day Freitas left an empty chair to honour his father, Itamar, who died in 2017.
