A brace from Omar Marmoush against his former club earned Eintracht Frankfurt a 2-1 victory at VfL Wolfsburg on Matchday 3.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller named an unchanged starting line-up after his team’s 3-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim before the international break. New signing Mo Dahoud was included in the squad for the first time.
Effective Eagles
Wearing their new orange third shirt for the first time, Eintracht matched the weather at the Volkswagen Arena but it was the home side who made the brighter start. Patrick Wimmer headed just wide from one of several corners (8’), before Mattias Svanberg headed over from Jakub Kaminski’s cross (22’).
But it was the Eagles, somewhat against the run of play, who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark. From Kevin Trapp’s kick, Hugo Larsson flicked the ball on to Hugo Ekitiké, who raced away before squaring it for Omar Marmoush, who lifted the ball over goalkeeper Kamil Grabara before tapping it in. It was the Egyptian’s second goal in as many games as well as Ekitiké’s third assist of the season. Marmoush had an opportunity to double the lead nine minutes later, but headed straight at Grabara from Niels Nkounkou’s free-kick. His goal nevertheless remained the difference at half-time.
Santos on, Marmoush strikes again
Frankfurt began the second half with two changes, one of them enforced as Trapp picked up an injury taking a goal kick just before the break, meaning Kauã Santos came on for his professional debut. Farès Chaibi also replaced Mario Götze.
The Wolves again had more of the play in the early stages of the first half but the visitors looked the more threatening when they did get forward, particularly through Marmoush and Ekitiké. The pair were both denied by a double save from Grabara (64’). Moments later, Marmoush had another effort blocked by the Polish shot-stopper and Chaibi’s shot was stopped by a last-ditch challenge from defender Cédric Zesiger.
As the contest became more end-to-end, Wolfsburg levelled the score on 76 minutes, when Ridle Baku worked the ball on to his left foot in the D and curled it past Santos. Parity only lasted six minutes, though. Eintracht were awarded a penalty when the referee spotted a handball from Zesiger at a free-kick, and Marmoush confidently buried it into the corner for his and the team’s second goal (82’).
In a frantic finish to the game, the hosts had one big chance to equalise, but substitute Aurèle Amenda – like Santos, making his Bundesliga debut – blocked Kevin Behrens’ shot in a crowded penalty area. The Eagles could have made it less nervy with Chaibi and fellow substitute Matanovic both having opportunities to score, but it didn’t matter as they saw out a first win over the Wolves since April 2021.
