A statement that highlights the loss of influence of the Italian league, which has become merely a transitional champion
Marotta: "In Serie A, only Modric is a champion"
Inter president Giuseppe Marotta paints a bleak picture of the state of Italian football. In his view, Serie A can no longer compete with the Premier League or La Liga.
"Deals like (Kylian) Mbappé's are simply not possible in Italy today," he said, as quoted by Goal.com. Marotta recalls that there was a time when Inter, Juventus, or AC Milan could attract the world's biggest stars. But now, only a handful of clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, or Bayern Munich can truly compete in the transfer market.
And he uses a symbolic example: Luka Modric. Having arrived at AC Milan this summer, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner is, in his eyes, the only true champion in Serie A. "In Serie A, there is only one champion—Modric. And he is 40 years old," Marotta laments.
