Jesse Marsch admitted Alphonso Davies was never set to face Switzerland, despite declaring him fit before kick-off, according to Canadian Soccer Daily.
Before the game, the Canada head coach said the Bayern Munich star was in line to return from injury.
Canada then lost 1-2 in their final World Cup group match.
After the defeat, Marsch said he used Davies as a decoy and knew he would not play. He said the ploy was intended to make Switzerland plan for him after he heard several questions about the player in their press conference.
Marsch added that Davies will be ready for the next match. Canada face South Africa in the round of 32 on Sunday, and the left-back could return then.
