Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (36) is nearing a reunion with Marseille as talks are at an advanced stage between the Gabonese international and the Ligue 1 side, according to RMC Sport. The former Arsenal and Chelsea centre-forward must first complete his two-year contract termination with Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah.
Aubameyang joined Marseille two years ago after terminating his Chelsea contract. He signed a three-year deal with the Olympiens and shone through, despite Marseille’s struggles this season with two managerial changes as Marcelino was replaced by Gennaro Gattuso before Jean-Louis Gasset saw off the campaign. Aubameyang logged 30 goals and 11 assists in 51 games, endearing him to the Vélodrome faithful.
After a lone season in Saudi Arabia, where his goalscoring instincts have not eluded him (21 goals in 36 games), European clubs were on alert as reports of a contract termination came to light. Marseille made their interest known and Aubameyang was enticed by the prospect of returning to Southern France. OM offered Aubameyang a two-year deal and talks are now at an advanced stage regarding the financial package.
RMC Sport adds that Aubameyang could be Amine Gouiri’s back-up at the front of Roberto De Zerbi’s frontline. Under the tutelage of the Italian head coach, Marseille will return to the Champions League next season.
