According to a report from L’Équipe, Olympique de Marseille have not given up hope on signing Everton’s Neal Maupay (28) this summer. However, there are still issues that need to be resolved if they have any hope of securing this deal.

Marseille became in need of a backup striker following the injury to Faris Moumbagna (24) during the club’s opening game of the season against Stade Brestois. Moumbagna was only on the pitch for a few minutes after replacing Elye Wahi (21) before he suffered an ACL rupture.

The seriousness of the injury likely will mean that Moumbagna will not be available for a significant portion of the campaign leading Marseille to have to dip once more into the market. Maupay was considered a back-up option for Wahi after his successful loan to Brentford FC last season.

Everton reject Marseille’s approach for Neal Maupay

However, Everton were not keen on Marseille’s proposal of a loan with an option to buy since the Frenchman has only one year left on his contract. Everton want an immediate sale and Marseille are currently unable to afford that. This had led to Les Phocéens looking at other options but according to L’Équipe, they are keeping Maupay in the back of their minds.
