Marseille ‘interested in’ Utrecht’s Souffian El Karouani

Olympique de Marseille are interested in FC Utrecht defender Souffian El Karouani, according to Foot Mercato.

OM added Emerson Palmieri late in the transfer window to deepen their defensive options. The former West Ham United full-back has largely impressed at the Vélodrome, but the club want further depth and a different profile in that position as January nears.

El Karouani, a Morocco international, has been in standout form this season. He has three goals and 15 assists in 27 matches in all competitions, the most goal contributions by a defender in Europe. Despite that, he has not been called up for the upcoming AFCON.

Marseille may face competition from FC Porto and Benfica.

El Karouani’s contract at Utrecht expires at the end of the season and he does not plan to extend. One of those clubs could look to steal a march by moving for him in January.
