Illan Meslier could depart Arsenal less than two months after arriving, with Marseille exploring a move before the deadline. Foot Mercato reports that the 26-year-old is among the French club’s active options as they search for a goalkeeper.
The Frenchman ended a seven-year stay at Leeds United when his contract expired in June. Once first choice, he slipped to third in the pecking order and did not play a competitive first-team match last season, featuring only for the Under-21s.
At the start of July he joined Premier League champions Arsenal on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months. He has since emerged on shortlists elsewhere.
There is no clarity on Arsenal’s stance over an immediate exit. Meslier currently appears to be Mikel Arteta’s third-choice behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, and any offer could let the club turn a quick profit after a free signing.
Marseille are in the market for a goalkeeper before the window closes. A return to France had been widely expected once his Leeds deal ended, but doing so via Arsenal would be a notable twist.
On joining Arsenal, Meslier spoke of frustration at a year on the fringes at Elland Road, saying he had worked hard, reset mentally and returned with determination to prove his level and repay the faith in signing him.
