Timothy Weah praised Marseille’s collective reaction after their 2–1 Champions League win over Newcastle, and spoke about OM’s brace-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (36) following a vital win over the Premier League side on Tuesday evening. “We created chances in the first half but didn’t finish. In the second we were more aggressive and we took them. I’m very happy,” he told reporters in the Vélodrome’s mixed zone, attended by Get French Football News. The American admitted that the victory carried weight after the disappointment against Atalanta. “We needed this. The whole group was focused, the supporters too. We gave everything together. I’m proud tonight.” Weah was equally glowing about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored both goals – and wrote himself into Champions League history. At 36 years and 160 days, the OM striker became the oldest African player ever to score a brace in the competition, and the fourth oldest overall, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Edin Džeko.

“It’s a pleasure to play with him,” Weah continued. “He has no ego – he’s always for the team. He deserves everything that’s happening to him.”

Their late combination for the winner, he says, comes down to understanding. “He played with my brother at Milan, so there’s a natural link. I knew where to find him. Tonight, it worked.”GFFN | George Boxall – reporting from Stade Vélodrome, Marseille
