FLW’s Leicester City fan pundit has spoken about what the future looks like for Foxes defender Victor Kristiansen.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Leicester City have started the new Championship season positively under Marti Cifuentes.
The former QPR boss currently has the Foxes placed inside the play-offs in fourth place, taking nine points from a possible 12 on offer to leave them just three points off the top of the table.
As expected with relegation from the Premier League, the East Midlands outfit had to say goodbye to a number of first-team assets, including Mads Hermansen, Wilfried Ndidi, Kasey McAteer and James Justin.
Another player who was expected to move on was Victor Kristiansen, who was linked with a move to bitter rivals Nottingham Forest over the summer.
But that move didn’t materialise, and the Danish defender remains on the Leicester books, although he will now have to dislodge Luke Thomas for a starting position currently.
With this news in mind, FLW’s Leicester City fan pundit has weighed in about what Kristiansen should do next, given that some transfer windows are still open overseas.
Speaking to Football League World, Leicester City fan pundit Louchlainn Martin admitted Victor Kristiansen could still make a move away, with Turkey a favourable destination, but has advised him to remain at Leicester and fight for his place in order to realise his top-flight ambitions once again.
Louchlainn said: "With Victor Kristiansen, we were pretty sure he was going to leave the club this summer, because he’s had a pretty poor two and a half seasons.
"He got relegated in his first half, spent the second season on loan at Bologna and now relegated again in the third season, and it looks like Marti Cifuentes does like our left-back option in Luke Thomas, who isn’t a fan favourite. I think a lot of us aren’t sold on his ability, but he has started the first few games and done pretty well.
"Victor Kristansen was looked at by Nottingham Forest and a couple of clubs in Europe, I believe, but no bid or offer came in as far as we are aware.
"I still think there’s a future for him, especially this season. There’s definitely a chance he could still leave with the Saudi, Turkey and Portugal transfer windows still open, a Saudi move I can’t see but Turkey I could.
"I think he would prefer to stay at the top level because he is still young, he wants to make it in the game, he wants to be a left-back at a big club, I’m sure, and I don’t think a move to Turkey is going to achieve that.
"I think he’ll stay at the club, get his head down, try to get promoted with Leicester and then see what comes next summer. That’s what I would imagine happens as I think he’s good enough to come in for Luke Thomas, it just depends on what form he can piece together."
Despite signing for Leicester nearly three seasons ago, Victor Kristiansen is still only 22, and has so much more room to develop and grow into a top player if he is put into the correct system.
After failing to secure a move away in England, Leicester should use that as a sign to keep hold of him and reintegrate him back into the squad, as his talents could see him become one of the best full-backs in the second-tier this term.
Although Luke Thomas has made a promising start to life under Marti Cifuentes, there’s no doubt that Kristiansen is the far more talented individual, and could be such a key player for the team to sustain a promotion push if he wants to come back in and make a difference.
If Leicester are serious about wanting to get back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, then they have to be reluctant to part ways with some of their best assets. The club has already sanctioned a lot of high-profile exits this summer, and the line needs to be drawn so they can maintain high quality levels in their own squad.
If they follow that principle, then they have every chance of finishing towards the top end of the table, even in the event of a points deduction, which will be a huge test to overcome when it hits.
