Few voices in football history resonate quite like Martin Tyler. For more than three decades his commentary shaped how generations experienced the sport, his delivery becoming as familiar as the goals themselves. Now retired, the legendary broadcaster has been reminiscing on a career full of unforgettable moments, and one match stands above all others — a Liverpool classic at Anfield.
Tyler has faced criticism over the years from sections of fanbases who felt he leaned towards or against certain clubs, depending on the moment. Liverpool supporters remember both soaring praise and subdued reactions. Some accused him of sounding “bored” when Christian Benteke scored an overhead kick, while others pointed to his admiration of Anthony Martial’s goal against the Reds.
Yet when asked to name his greatest commentary memory, one match rises above everything else, and Liverpool sit right at the heart of it.
Speaking to The Mixer, he said: “This has been a stock answer for the period of time since it happened. It was 1996. It was Liverpool four, Newcastle three, which ended with Stan Collymore scoring the winner in added time, and Liverpool, I think Robbie Fowler got two, Stan got two and Ginola scored for Newcastle.
“Asprilla scored. I think Les got the other one and I think it really epitomised everything that’s good about football. Both teams were going for the title. Neither of them won it. They almost punched themselves out, really, in that night. There was Kevin Keegan hanging over the advertising boards. A famous shot when the seventh goal of the game went in.”
The 4-3 win remains one of the most beloved Premier League matches ever broadcast. Stan Collymore’s stoppage-time strike sparked pandemonium, with Anfield erupting as Kevin Keegan famously slumped over the advertising hoardings in disbelief.
It was pure football theatre, the kind that imprints itself on a generation. Older Liverpool fans still debate where it ranks among the club’s greatest modern moments, despite it arriving in a season where silverware was ultimately out of reach.
Tyler also recalled a humorous story involving two of the match’s goalscorers during the 2014 World Cup. Collymore, working as a pundit for talkSPORT at the time, joined Tyler in a lift on their way to the commentary gantry in São Paulo.
He said: “I’ve told this story a few times, but I’ll share it with you again. 2014 World Cup first game in Brazil, in Sao Paulo. Stan’s working for talkSPORT. Unusual for a ground they had a lift up to the top high commentary position. So Stan and I are going up in the lift to start our work, and the lift door opens up at the gantry level.
“Staring us in the face to come into the lift is Faustino Asprilla, and he goes to Stan without thinking, like he goes ‘You cost me my Premier League winners medal’. They just both burst out laughing. I thought that it meant that much that an instinctive reaction goes back to that game.”
Tyler may have retired from full-time broadcasting, but his voice remains permanently etched into Liverpool folklore. That wild April evening in 1996 encapsulated everything he loved about the sport. High stakes, raw emotion, unforgettable characters — and commentary that still echoes in living rooms nearly three decades on.
