José Martínez has bid farewell to Corinthians with a social media video posted on Tuesday, thanking the club and urging supporters not to doubt his dedication.
The 31-year-old’s montage featured fans and highlights from his spell. According to Globo.com, he made 70 appearances, scored two goals and won two trophies with the club.
He sustained the injury while on holiday and did not inform the medical department. When he eventually reported back more than a month late, citing problems obtaining a new passport, he complained of pain in his left knee.
Medical tests days later confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. The Venezuelan underwent surgery in São Paulo last week and is expected to be sidelined for eight to 10 months.
To avoid a legal dispute, Corinthians and Martínez agreed to terminate his contract. The club covered the cost of the operation and will pay 30% of his wages until the end of this year.
