Mary Fowler is among the 10 best young players in Europe and the Australian could win the Golden Girl award. This trophy is a recognition of the best U21 women’s footballer on the continent during a calendar year.
Fowler is on fire this season in the Women’s Super League, despite it only just starting. She has played more minutes in just three games this season for Manchester City than she did in the previous term (185 minutes in 11 games).
Fowler has been in the starting 11 in every game, summing up 225 minutes in just three games. She bagged two assists in City’s 5-0 victory against Bristol, helping the Sky Blues edge their way to the top of the table.
The Australian played well in the Women’s World Cup this summer with her country. She was involved in most of the goal-scoring chances, being a linking player with her teammates but also finding the back of the net as well. Fowler was the youngest footballer on the Matildas roster, though.
Her performance in the most important international competition took her to be nominated for this award.
Salma Paralluelo, Vicky López (Spain, FC Barcelona) Esmee Brugts (The Netherlands, FC Barcelona), Giulia Dragoni (Italy, FC Barcelona), Linda Caicedo (Colombia, Real Madrid), Katrine Kühl (Denmark, Arsenal), Vicki Bècho (France, Olympique Lyonnais), Laurina Fazer (France, PSG) and Chiara Beccari (Italy, Sassuolo) are the other nominees for this award.
This year will be the second time the award will be given. It also is the second time the Australian is nominated. Similar to the Golden Boy award, the winner (an U21 women’s footballer) will be decided by 40 journalists. All of them, from the most prestigious European media.
