La Provence reports that Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood came close to being put on the transfer list last season amid tensions with sporting director Medhi Benatia.

Benatia frequently criticised Greenwood’s commitment and work rate during the campaign, and the forward was considered at risk of being listed because he was not contributing enough defensively. Around the club, Greenwood avoided the sporting director.

Then head coach Roberto De Zerbi briefly followed that line, leaving Greenwood out of the starting XI for two consecutive matches towards the end of the winter period, against RC Lens and Paris Saint-Germain.

Greenwood soon returned to the team and finished the season strongly. He scored six goals in the final eight league matches.

One was a decisive strike against Le Havre AC that helped Marseille secure UEFA Champions League qualification. That late run meant he was not placed on the market in the following summer window.
