Mason Greenwood, ambidextrous finisher tormenting goalkeepers and defences

Ambidextrous and unpredictable, Marseille forward Mason Greenwood leads Ligue 1 with 10 goals in 15 matches, unsettling opponents with spontaneous movement and a shot that can come from anywhere.

According to L'Équipe, Friday’s briefings at La Commanderie were filled with praise. Roberto De Zerbi cites Ballon d’Or potential, while Geronimo Rulli calls him among his finest team-mates.

On 25 November against Newcastle at the Vélodrome, a 2-1 win, he was double marked down the right, so he dropped off to feed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with passes in behind. De Zerbi gives him licence to switch flanks.

Against Lille, a 0-1 defeat, Berke Özer read a solo surge and saved to his right, the rebound falling kindly for the goalkeeper. Against Union Saint-Gilloise, a 3-2 victory, Greenwood scored twice with both feet.

Ligue 1 goalkeepers still struggle to read his release. Greenwood shoots often, five or six times a match from varied angles, and in penalty drills he tends to favour his right.

De Zerbi has challenged his defensive work, intensity and hold-up play, and notes Igor Paixao’s graft helps Greenwood shine. He still sees rare natural gifts and wants the forward to understand the message within three or four years.

Last season Rulli said that even after six weeks he could not tell Greenwood’s stronger foot and hoped for at least 20 goals. Greenwood ended on 21, 14 from open play and seven penalties, joint top with Ousmane Dembélé.
