Roberto De Zerbi addressed the links between Olympique de Marseille and Mason Greenwood (22) in his first press conference as manager of Les Phocéens.

It has been reported that Marseille are currently leading the race to sign the English striker from Manchester United this summer. According to Fabrice Hawkins, the two clubs are currently negotiating a bid thought to be valued at around €25 million plus bonuses for the Carrington academy product. However, Lazio are also thought to be interested in the striker.

De Zerbi was unwilling to talk in too much detail about the Manchester United player, “He hasn’t signed, there’s not much to say. He’s a world-class player. I don’t know his background. No matter the player, once they sign here, they become like my children. I protect them through thick and thin. Maybe, in private I’ll pull their ears, but in public, I’ll defend them like my sons.”

Greenwood is available this summer after returning to Manchester United from his loan at Getafe. The English side have been unwilling to reintegrate the player into the squad after charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm were dropped. The player has denied all the allegations against him.
