Mason Greenwood could return to the Champions League next season, with Fenerbahce’s presidential rivals both pursuing the Marseille forward in a move to Türkiye, the BBC reports.
Greenwood is the priority summer target for both candidates, former president Aziz Yildirim and Hakan Safi, with the winner due to be confirmed on Sunday. Personal terms are not viewed as a stumbling block, and the Istanbul club would back the victor to land him.
The 24-year-old appears increasingly likely to leave Marseille this summer. He scored 48 goals in 81 appearances and finished joint second in last season’s Ligue 1 scoring chart with 16, yet sporting director Gregory Lorenzi said last week the club would listen to offers despite three years left on his deal.
Greenwood has rebuilt his career away from Manchester United after a club investigation concluded he would not play for them again, following the dropping of attempted rape and assault charges in February 2023. His time in France also drew scrutiny, with new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi recently apologising for defending him while coaching Marseille.
Fenerbahce will enter next season’s Champions League play-offs after finishing Super Lig runners-up, three points behind Galatasaray, while Marseille’s fifth place brings the Europa League. If a transfer happens, United are in line for a sell-on payment from his 2024 move. Roma have also been linked, and Greenwood’s next step hinges heavily on the result of that vote before any bids are launched.
