La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Mason Greenwood has given Roma the go-ahead for a summer switch, choosing the Stadio Olimpico over Fenerbahce. The former Manchester United forward has agreed in principle to a five-year deal worth about €4.5 million a season.
Talks now hinge on the fee. Roma plan €45 million including bonuses, but Marseille want €50 million. With Manchester United due 40 per cent of any sale, a €50 million deal would send around €20 million to Old Trafford.
Marseille, who paid €31.6 million in 2024, are under no pressure to discount. Fenerbahce’s proposal, offering a net salary between €7m and €8m, remains on the table and Roma cannot compete with it.
Gian Piero Gasperini has promised Greenwood a central role in a 3-4-2-1, likely on the right of a dual number 10 behind the striker. That plan, and the prospect of Champions League football, has helped ward off Atletico Madrid’s interest.
Greenwood is pushing to settle his future before pre-season, having reported for fitness checks this week, and his camp has indicated the Olimpico is his preferred destination.
Not all Roma fans approve, with an online petition opposing the move and citing Greenwood’s past off-field controversies, arguing it would conflict with the club’s Amami e Basta initiative against gender-based violence. Roma are working on final details with the Friedkin Group having approved the outlay. Today could be decisive, and if completed the transfer would be a club record, surpassing the €42 million paid for Patrik Schick.
