Most fans expected Mason Greenwood to become a world-beater after he broke into the Manchester United first team at the age of 17.

Then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put his faith in the versatile forward, and he repaid the Norwegian’s trust by netting 35 times in 129 games across all competitions.

The forward was arrested in January 2022 by Greater Manchester Police and was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Subsequently, those charges were dropped after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and “new material came to light”.

Mason Greenwood: Life away from United

However, the Red Devils decided not to reintegrate him back into the first team squad following severe fan backlash.

As a result, the Englishman has had to rebuild his career away from England, initially on loan at Getafe, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists, and was adjudged their Player of the Year.

The 24-year-old earned a permanent move away to Olympique Marseille, where he seems to have rediscovered his devastating form that had made him a household name among Premier League fans.

This season, the England international has 20 goals to his name and six assists, and has garnered interest from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and even Liverpool.

Devastating form in Ligue 1

However, according to Football Insider, the 20-time English league champions had inserted a buyback clause when selling him to Marseille, and the club hierarchy are contemplating triggering it.

That could mean United sign him for a substantially lower fee than his current market value, with recent reports suggesting the Ligue 1 side could bank as much as €100 million from his sale.

“Man United officials have internally discussed the idea of bringing Mason Greenwood back to the club, sources have told Football Insider.

“The Red Devils included a buy-back clause when they sold the 24-year-old right winger to Marseille in the summer of 2024, where they can sign the attacker for a knockdown fee less than his worth in the current market.”

How will fans react?

It is still unclear whether the operation is aimed at eventually reintegrating him into the first team fold or whether INEOS want to sell him themselves and earn pure profit.

Fans will be keen to follow this story in the days to come.
