Former Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood’s international future is still very much up in the air.
The Carrington academy product was on fire last season for Olympique de Marseille, scoring 22 goals in all competitions.
The Englishman is already off the mark this season with one goal in the first three matches in the new campaign.
After his legal troubles resulted in the end of his career at Manchester United and most likely in the Premier League, Greenwood has not been considered for the English national team.
As a result, he was in the process of transferring his international allegiances to Jamaica.
Nonetheless, Greenwood dramatically turned down the chance to play for the Jamaicans during the current international break.
The national team boss Steve McClaren explained, “we acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp but in a conversation with his family, he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody.”
This has fuelled speculation that the 23-year-old may be in line for a spectacular recall for the Three Lions.
England boss Thomas Tuchel has shot down these rumours however, in comments carried by The BBC.
The German confirmed in his news conference that, “I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp.”
He elaborated, “my understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn’t give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team.”
Whilst these comments would suggest that Greenwood will not return to the England set up anytime soon, it was also suggested that this was largely down to his perceived desire to represent Jamaica.
Owing to the incredibly controversial legal case that engulfed Greenwood in his final days as a United player, it would seem a massive gamble for any England manager to welcome him back into the fold.
