Real Sociedad’s squad are on holiday, but Pellegrino Matarazzo has delayed his break to work with director of football Erik Bretos in San Sebastián, shaping plans for a demanding next season. Internationals bound for the World Cup will soon join their national camps.
The intention is to keep the core, yet changes are coming. Aritz Elustondo, Caleta-Car and Wesley Gassova have already said their goodbyes. Brais Méndez, Karrikaburu and Zakharyan could leave, there are doubts over Remiro and Aihen, and Take Kubo’s future is unclear.
Fixing the defence is urgent after conceding 61 goals, the worst record in La Liga, which blunted the side’s attacking output. Recruitment must be precise and avoid a repeat of the underwhelming winter arrival of Wesley. Matarazzo will also consider promotions from the B team.
Real will contest Liga, Copa del Rey, Europa League and the Supercopa de España. After the final-day draw at Espanyol, Matarazzo said he is very positive about next season, wants to go as far as possible in all four competitions and insists they must work hard from the start.
His outlook chimed with a recent interview. “The United States is too big for small dreams,” he said in Men in Blazers. “After winning the Copa final, the first thing I checked was where the Europa League final is. It is in Frankfurt, an hour from my home”.
