According to Diario Vasco, Pellegrino Matarazzo and Hansi Flick meet again at Anoeta tomorrow, their third meeting after two Bundesliga duels in 2020 between Stuttgart and Bayern Munich.
On 28 November 2020 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Stuttgart were eighth after a strong start, while Bayern led the league despite a 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim.
Coulibaly put Stuttgart ahead, then Coman and Lewandowski turned it before the break. Douglas Costa sealed a 1-3 win on 87 minutes, with Bayern on 28 goals in eight.
Flick praised Stuttgart’s display and the game’s intensity, calling the hosts attractive and awkward opponents. Matarazzo felt a second goal might have changed the outcome and accepted Bayern’s ruthless edge.
The return on 20 March at the Allianz Arena began with Alphonso Davies sent off after 12 minutes. Despite it, Lewandowski struck three and Gnabry added another for a 4-0 half-time lead.
Bayern were four points clear of Leipzig, while Stuttgart sat eighth, two behind Union Berlin. Matarazzo later described a mental swing after the red card, having started well and even looked dominant.
Bayern won the Bundesliga by 13 points. Stuttgart finished ninth, five off Europe. Flick did not continue at Bayern, and Matarazzo stayed another season and nine games of 2022/23 before dismissal.
Matarazzo has faced Barcelona once, a pre-season friendly on 31 July 2021. The match was nearly cancelled after two positives at Stuttgart, kick-off was delayed an hour by traffic, and Koeman’s side won 0-3 through Depay, Demir and Riqui Puig.
