Match Officials: Andy Madley to referee Manchester City vs Sunderland

The Premier League have appointed Andy Madley to Manchester City’s home clash with Sunderland as match referee this weekend.

Pep Guardiola and his players will be wanting to put in a far more defensively secure performance than they did last time out, whilst pairing that with a similarly bright attacking display as seen in midweek.

Adding to their dramatic win over Leeds United in a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City almost threw away a 1-5 advantage at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night as they emerged from West London with a slender 4-5 lead over Marco Silva’s Fulham.

While the attacking display on show will give Manchester City fans plenty of hope that goals can be delivered and in abundance this season, their susceptibility to conceding several in quick succession will be a cause for concern.

And up next is a hugely impressive Sunderland side fronted by Regis Le Bris, whose latest scalp came at Anfield in midweek, coming away from Merseyside with a point after a 1-1 draw against Arne Slot’s struggling Liverpool.

The North-East newcomers secured a 2-2 draw at home to the current English top-flight leaders earlier this season, meaning the weekend’s clash at the Etihad Stadium is far from an easy task for Guardiola’s men.

Ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Sunderland, the Premier League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Match Referee

The 42-year-old West Yorkshire match official Andy Madley has been put in charge of this one, overseeing Manchester City’s meeting with Sunderland from the role of on-field match referee at the Etihad Stadium.

Madley has taken charge of nine matches across multiple competitions so far this campaign, with fixtures in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League qualifying, the Carabao Cup, and League One bringing 24 yellow cards, one red card, and one awarded penalty.

Throughout his top-level officiating career, Madley has officiated a total of 14 Manchester City matches, with the Sky Blues emerging victorious in 10 of those meetings, drawing two, and losing the remaining two.

The last time Andy Madley officiated a Manchester City match came on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, as Guardiola’s side closed a disappointing campaign with a 0-2 win on the road at Craven Cottage in Kevin De Bruyne’s final-ever appearance for the club.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Andy Madley from the pitch at the Etihad Stadium this weekend will be an Assistant Referee pairing of Nicholas Hopton and Craig Taylor, the Premier League have confirmed.

Video Assistant Referees

Monitoring events involving Manchester City and Sunderland at Stockley Park and the VAR Hub will be the Premier League’s appointed Video Assistant Referee Michael Salisbury, alongside Assistant Video Assistant Referee Tony Harrington.

Fourth Official

Standing between Pep Guardiola and Regis Le Bris’ respective Manchester City and Sunderland dugouts in the role of Fourth Official on Saturday afternoon will be referee, Thomas Bramall.
