UEFA have confirmed that a predominantly French team of match officials will oversee proceedings between Real Madrid and Manchester City this week.
Pep Guardiola will be looking for a mammoth result in the Spanish capital to bounce back from their hugely underwhelming showing last time out in European competition in a 0-2 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
10 changes to his starting line-up left Manchester City fans questioning Guardiola’s approach to a game that could have all-but sealed their place in the last-16 of Europe’s premier tournament, through the automatic route.
However, City now have plenty of work to do starting with Real Madrid, and closing with a home tie against Galatasaray in the New Year, before a visit to the Arctic Circle and Norway’s Bodo/Glimt.
Manchester City come into their trip to the Bernabeu full of confidence however, dismissing of high-flying Sunderland 3-0 on Saturday afternoon while Real Madrid succumbed to a 0-2 home defeat to Celta Vigo – a fixture they ended with nine-men.
Now, ahead of the meeting between Real Madrid and Manchester City, UEFA have announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Bernabeu!
Overseeing matters between Real Madrid and Manchester City from the Bernabeu as match referee this week will be the highly-experienced French match official, Clément Turpin – it has been announced.
The 43-year-old has taken charge of a number of high-profile matches throughout his top-level officiating career, and this season has overseen 13 contests across Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League, Saudi Pro League, and UAE Pro League action.
In those outings, Turpin has issued a total of 48 yellow cards, two straight red cards, and awarded five penalties in the process.
Manchester City have a mixed record in contests where Clement Turpin has been the match referee, winning three, drawing one, and losing two of the six matches overseen by the Frenchman, with those games featuring nine yellow cards and four penalties awarded.
Turpin’s last outing involving City came at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer and the Sky Blues’ 2-5 win over Italian giants Juventus, while the 2024/25 campaign also saw him take charge of the 2-3 home defeat to Real Madrid in the last-16 play-off tie’s first-leg.
Accompanying Clement Turpin from the field of play at the Santiago Bernabeu this week will be fellow French match officials in Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages, appointed into the assistant referee positions.
As for VAR operations at the Bernabeu, French referee Jérôme Brisard will be the game’s Video Assistant Referee, accompanied by Germany’s Sören Storks as the Assistant Video Assistant Referee.
Standing between the two dugouts and managing proceedings between Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola will be French fourth official, Stéphanie Frappart.
