Manchester City will aim to overturn a three-goal deficit to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this week as Real Madrid travel to the Etihad Stadium.

Despite being viewed in various quarters as the favourites to claim victory at the Bernabeu in the first-leg of the last-16 clash, a first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde put Manchester City to the sword in the Spanish capital.

Things could have been much worse for Pep Guardiola and his players in truth despite their own attempts on the Real Madrid goal, with Gianluigi Donnarumma denying Vinicius Junior from the penalty spot in the second-half.

Five Things Learned: Real Madrid 3-0 Manchester City (UEFA Champions League Round of 16 First Leg)

There would be no bounce back performance either in the Premier League, with City seemingly out of the title race after Arsenal defeated Everton and the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham at the London Stadium.

It was once again stale in attack in terms of creative output, as Bernardo Silva’s lobbed effort was cancelled out by Konstantinos Mavropanos in the first-half, whilst City could not break down a resolute Hammers defence in the second 45 minutes.

And now, ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and Real Madrid on Tuesday night, UEFA have announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Clement Turpin Confirmed: French Official to Lead Etihad Miracle Mission

UEFA have confirmed that an all-French team of match officials will oversee Manchester City against Real Madrid in the north-west of England on Tuesday night, led by Clément Turpin as match referee.

The 43-year-old has overseen a total of 22 matches across competitions so far this campaign, officiating across Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League and its qualification phase, UAE Pro League, Saudi Pro League, and Coupe de France.

In his 22 outings, Turpin has issued a total of 84 yellow cards, four straight red cards, and awarding nine penalties in the process, and has already officiated Real Madrid against Manchester City once this season as Guardiola’s side won 1-2 at the Bernabeu in the league phase.

In total, Turpin has overseen a total of seven matches involving Manchester City, with four of those resulting in a win for Pep Guardiola’s side, one ending in a draw, and the remaining two outings ending in a Sky Blue defeat.

Aside from the aforementioned league phase visit to the Bernabeu, Clement Turpin also oversaw City’s 2-3 home defeat to Real Madrid in the last-16 play-off first-leg clash in February, 2025.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Clement Turpin at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night will be fellow French officials in Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages, who have been appointed as assistant referees for the tie.

Video Assistant Referees

Overseeing Manchester City against Real Madrid from the VAR Hub this week will be Jérôme Brisard as the game’s Video Assistant Referee, alongside Bastien Dechepy as Assistant Video Assistant Referee.

Fourth Official

Managing the two dugouts led by Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa this week will be referee Willy Delajod, who has been allocated into the Fourth Official role for the contest.
