The Premier League have announced that Paul Tierney has been appointed as match referee for Manchester City against West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s side will look to continue their fine run of form across competitions, having further boosted their trophy-winning hopes in 2026 by progressing into the last-four of the Carabao Cup in their last outing.

Goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho either side of the half-time interval against Brentford in midweek saw City emerge as 2-0 victors, lining up a two-legged affair against Newcastle United in January and February 2026.

It was somewhat of a statement win last time out in the Premier League as Manchester City ran away with all three points at Selhurst Park after a win at Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, piling the pressure on league leaders Arsenal even further.

But with good form also comes a mounting list of absentees for Pep Guardiola, as Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri’s exit for the African Cup of Nations was added to by Oscar Bobb’s hamstring issue picked up against Brentford on Wednesday night.

And ahead of the meeting between Manchester City and West Ham United, the Premier League have now also announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at the Etihad Stadium!

Match Referee

Overseeing on-field proceedings between Manchester City and West Ham from the Etihad Stadium this weekend will be match referee Paul Tierney, the Premier League have confirmed.

The 44-year-old official has taken charge of nine matches across all competitions so far this season, with the weekend’s match-up in the North-West being his first outing in the Premier League of the brand new campaign.

In matches across all three levels of the Football League and the Premier League Cup, Tierney has issued a total of 29 yellow cards, without dismissing any players in that period, but awarding five penalty kicks in the process.

Manchester City have in fact been Paul Tierney’s most officiated club in his professional refereeing career, meeting the Sky Blues on 31 occasions of which the Citizens have won 27, drawing twice, and losing twice without any red cards shown.

However, Tierney has not come across City since towards the end of their last Premier League title-winning campaign, operating as referee on the club’s 2-4 away win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Assistant Referees

Accompanying Paul Tierney at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon will be a pairing of Assistant Referees appointed by the Premier League in Richard West and Marc Perry.

Video Assistant Referees

Overseeing proceedings from Stockley Park and the VAR Hub, the Premier League have appointed Alex Chilowicz into the role of Video Assistant Referee, while Dan Robathan will be the Assistant Video Assistant Referee.

Fourth Official

Standing between the two dugouts this weekend in the role of Fourth Official will be Lewis Smith, managing events between Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and West Ham’s Nuno Espirito Santo.
