The west Londoners have started positively at both ends of the pitch this season, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 Premier League Cup win over Wycombe Wanderers and scoring three goals to beat Stoke City U21s in PL2.
Saunders' side have enjoyed a spread of goalscorers, with Josh Dasilva, Michel Boni, Kaye Furo and Theo Mawene each netting so far this campaign.
Brentford impressed on their way to a 3-2 win away at Stoke.
Furo got the Bees off to a flying start with an early goal, with Mawene following suit later on in the first half with a brilliant individual effort.
The hosts pulled one back before the break, but Saunders’ side reacted positively out of half-time to piece together a superb early move before Jayden Meghoma’s cross was turned into the Potters’ net by a defender.
While Stoke scored a second goal to make the latter stages of the second half tense, the Bees held on to take home all three points.
Sunderland sit second in the PL2 table following a dominant 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest in their season opener.
Trey Ogunsuyi starred for the young Black Cats with a hat-trick, while Jack Whittaker and Timur Tutierov also got on the scoresheet in the impressive victory.
Sunderland also got their Premier League International Cup campaign under way with a 1-1 draw against PSV U21s.
Led by head coach Matt Craddock, Sunderland will return home for their next two PL2 fixtures, which are against Ipswich Town and Norwich City.
