On Saturday afternoon, Bayern Munich took to the field for matchday 14 of the 24/25 Bundesliga season, as they faced Mainz on the road — being condemned to their first defeat in the league all season.

Bayern lose first game in the Bundesliga this campaign

With a host of injuries to contend with, Vincent Kompany opted for a line up of; Peretz - Laimer, Dier, Kim, Guerreiro - Kimmich, Pavlović - Olise, Musiala, Sané - Müller. As a result of him being on four yellow cards, and RB Leipzig next up - Kompany decided not to risk Dayot Upamecano for this one. No injury.

After six minutes, an Olise strike from inside the ‘D’ hit Robin Zentner’s right hand post. Another six minutes later, the Frenchman headed over the bar— with Musiala audibly suggesting he should have headed across the box to where he was stood.

Moments later, a very quick Mainz break led to captain Jonathan Burkardt running in on goal, but he dragged his effort wide. With just under half an hour on the clock, Anthony Caci had a big chance to open the scoring for the hosts, but failed to find the net when well placed. Big let off for Bayern.

There were two minutes of the first-half remaining when Mainz took the lead, via Jae-sung Lee. Can’t say it wasn’t coming, a really poor first half from Bayern. That would be the only goal of the first-half.

Just before the hour mark, Boey and Goretzka replaced Guerreiro and Pavlović as Vincent Kompany looked to switch things up.

Two minutes later, Lee scored his and Mainz’s second goal of the game, to just sum up an absolute disaster of a game. Soon after, Tel replaced Dier.

With three minutes of normal time remaining, Sané got one back for Bayern from close range. However, it was not enough to help Die Roten get a point, with Mainz winning the game 2-1.

As a result of this defeat, Bayern’s lead on Bayer Leverkusen has been cut to four points, having been nine points two weeks ago. Should Eintracht Frankfurt win against RB Leipzig tomorrow, there will be just a three point lead at the top of the table.
