With only nine matchdays remaining until the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs field is locked in, every game is becoming increasingly important.

And postseason ambitions will be a main theme throughout Matchday 27's must-watch matches, as teams jockey for positioning.

First, Western Conference contenders San Jose Earthquakes and LAFC square off for Walmart Saturday Showdown, before Nashville SC attempt to be the first team to clinch a playoff spot against a Chicago Fire FC side looking to leap back into the top four in the Eastern Conference.

Finally, Inter Miami CF host San Diego FC during Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. LAFC

Walmart Saturday Showdown

Walmart Saturday Showdown heads to Levi's Stadium this weekend for a clash between California clubs battling for a top-four spot in the Western Conference.

LAFC travel to the Bay Area with just one victory in their last eight league matches, most recently falling 3-1 to last-place Sporting Kansas City in a shocking upset. Still, even with their latest struggles, the Black & Gold are just one point behind the Quakes for the fourth and final home playoff spot in the West.

As is often the case, superstar forward Denis Bouanga (13g/8a) and South Korean legend Son Heung-Min (5g/12a) will be at the center of the action for LAFC, as will goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who leads the league with 12 clean sheets this year.

Meanwhile, after suffering an eight-game winless skid earlier this summer, San Jose look to have recaptured their early-season form, snatching back-to-back victories to return to the top four places in the West. 

Homegrown midfielder Niko Tsakiris (3g/10a) has been the catalyst when healthy this season, as have forwards Preston Judd (12g/3a) and Ousseni Bouda (6g/4a).  Marquee offseason signing Timo Werner (6g/7a) could also help the group, as he works his way back from injury.

With the season hitting the home stretch, points are at a premium. Can either side earn a statement rivalry win to tighten their grip on a home playoff place?

Nashville SC vs. Chicago Fire FC

Nashville SC enter Matchday 27 with another opportunity to become the first team to clinch an Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs spot.

The current Supporters' Shield leaders have opened up an eight-point gap over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the Shield standings and need just a win on Saturday to lock up their place.

Led by Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year candidate B.J. Callaghan, Nashville's team-first mentality has reaped rewards. The club had a league-high four All-Stars this year, including Golden Boot presented by Audi contender Sam Surridge (15g/1a) and 2022 Landon Donovan MLS MVP winner Hany Mukhtar (10g/7a), as well as dynamic right back Andy Nájar and goalkeeper Brian Schwake, who was recently named to his first USMNT camp.

On the other end of the pitch, Chicago have endured a slight rough patch over the last month. Winless in five straight league matches, the Fire have dropped out of the top four spots in the East and currently sit fifth (39 points).

A win against the Eastern Conference's best could not only vault them back into the home playoff places, but also bring a much-needed confidence boost. 

Star striker Robert Lewandowski has recorded 6g/2a in 10 matches for the Fire and will look to continue his hot start to life in the Windy City on Saturday. Elsewhere, expect Maren Haile-Selassie (8g/8a), DP winger Philip Zinckernagel (5g/10a) and USMNT netminder Chris Brady to play key roles.

Inter Miami CF v. San Diego FC

Sunday Night Soccer pres. by Continental Tire

Fresh off their Campeones Cup victory over LIGA MX powerhouse Cruz Azul, Inter Miami host San Diego FC for Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire.

Wednesday night's 2-0 win was Miami's fourth trophy in four years since the arrival of superstar Lionel Messi, as well as his world-record 48th overall title.

Now, Messi – the Landon Donovan MLS MVP frontrunner with 19g/13a – and the Herons will look to transfer that strong form to MLS play, as they attempt to keep pace with Nashville at the top of the East.

San Diego are clinging to the ninth and final postseason spot in the West. After a historic expansion campaign in 2025, the Chrome-and-Azul have faced a more difficult sophomore season. 

Three straight losses have seen San Diego slide down the Western Conference table, only ahead of the LA Galaxy on goal difference.

San Diego will look to their stars to help lead a late-season turnaround. Expect two-time All-Star Anders Dreyer (9g/11a), as well as summer signings Elias Achouri and Cédric Bakambu, to be heavily involved should SDFC pull off an upset in a rowdy away environment.
