Despite a dramatic late victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, the mood at Mainz 05 remains focused rather than celebratory. Captain Silvan Widmer and brace hero Paul Nebel both emphasized that the fight for Bundesliga survival is far from over.

Widmer: “The job isn't done yet!”

Mainz captain Widmer struck a cautious tone after the final whistle, underlining that the win, while important, does not guarantee safety.

“The job in the Bundesliga isn’t finished yet - we still have a few steps to go,” he said. “Today’s game was great, but survival is not secured.”

Widmer also pointed to the challenges of a demanding season, with Mainz balancing domestic duties and European competition.

“From the start of the season, it was clear this would be a tough year with all the Conference League matches. It’s not easy for us to mentally reset every time,” he explained. “But we’re on a really good run at the moment - and that’s how it should continue.”

Reflecting on the decisive goal, Widmer highlighted the team effort behind the late winner.

“Kaishu Sano made a great dribble, my cross was decent, and it found Nelson Weiper. Luckily Paul was there - he’s on a great run right now, especially after a difficult period.”

Nebel: “A huge win for us!”

Matchwinner Nebel, who scored twice including the dramatic late goal, focused on the collective importance of the victory.

“First and foremost, it was very important that we won today. It’s been a great week for us, and I’m very happy I could contribute,” he said.

The young midfielder stressed the team’s determination in the relegation battle:

“Right now, we just really want it. Today was a good step. We all feel it - we want to stay up together.”

Nebel also reflected on his personal resurgence after a challenging phase earlier in the season.

“The most important thing is to keep working and not let your head drop, even when things aren’t going well or when you’re not playing much,” he explained. “That’s what I tried to do, even when I was frustrated. I’m really happy the turnaround has come.”

Speaking about his opening goal, Nebel revealed the influence of teammate Nadiem Amiri: “Sometimes you can force things. Nadiem told me to shoot more often - I had that in my mind.”
