Manchester United may have to become embroiled in lengthy negotiations to secure the services of Mateus Fernandes.
It has been widely reported that Fernandes is keen to join United, who have already made a move for the Portuguese midfielder.
Following West Ham United’s relegation to the Championship, many expected this to be a straightforward pursuit. However, the chaos in east London may well impact plans in Manchester.
According to Claret and Hugh, there is likely to be very little transfer activity happening at West Ham following the club’s co-owner David Sullivan’s departure.
The Hammers need to raise upwards of £100 million in sales. However, at the moment, there is little clarity over who is in charge of leading negotiations for West Ham in the summer transfer window.
It is claimed Manchester United believe they can open discussions for Mateus Fernandes at £60 million.

However, it is suggested the Premier League giants’ attempts to negotiate a deal for the 5ft 10in tall midfield gem may not go anywhere currently “in the absence of anyone actively overseeing transfer negotiations.”
Meanwhile, earlier today, The Athletic reported that West Ham intend to demand £80m for Fernandes, who has also attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
United are not prepared to meet that asking price and “there is an expectation that, over time, that fee should fall.”
However, the Red Devils have no desire to put all their eggs in the Fernandes basket.
United continue to chase Nottingham Forest’s £105m-rated Elliot Anderson. Furthermore, they have held talks on Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton among others.
Given the asking prices being thrown around in the Premier League, Ederson for a fee of around £35m is already starting to look like a shrewd acquisition.
