United got off to an incredible start against their bitter rivals, with summer signing Bryan Mbeumo finding the back of the net less than two minutes in.

The visitors were happy to drop deep and let Liverpool have the ball for large sections of the game. It’s a tactic that worked up until Cody Gakpo, who had struck the post twice, finally got on the score sheet in the 78th minute of proceedings.

However, United retook their lead not long after. Harry Maguire rose above Ibrahima Konaté to head home a superb cross from captain Bruno Fernandes, sealing all three points for United at a ground where they had not tasted victory since 2016.

There were a number of standout performers, including Cunha. The Brazilian has yet to register his first goal contribution for United but he influenced the game in several other ways, notably with his outstanding ball carrying. On multiple occasions, he embarked on surging runs forward while under immense pressure from rival players.

In the dying embers of the game especially, Cunha was immense and helped United get over the line.

There were some concerns that he may have picked up an injury after he was spotted limping at full-time, but the player has insisted that everything is fine.

He spoke to Stadium Astro after the final whistle and was asked whether he was injured. Cunha answered, “I’m so cramped. I’m, like, dead right now, because if I… I stretch my leg, I feel cramped, so I use, like, this method [of limping].”

On his search for a maiden United goal, Cunha explained, “Right now, [I’m adapting]. In the beginning, it is normal to need a little bit more time to adapt. And then I think in the last conversation with him [Ruben Amorim], this kind of participation in the game was something that he asked.”

“And then I think, yeah, every game, every week that we pass together is a little bit more time to learn and then showing that we can, I think, I can adapt and then try everything to do what he wants.”

Cunha continued, “Of course, everyone wants to perform more in individual terms, numbers, everything.”

“But I think the first point to be here is help the team to come back to the glory there is now.”

“I think if this is my part right now, I’m happy. I’ll try everything. And then, of course, the other part of individual things will come, and then I’ll be happy also.”

The 26-year-old stressed that it is a privilege to play for United.

“For me, it’s a privilege. I always dream to be here. I always… So, I’m religious. I ask God to be here. And now, I cannot be here and then thinking about the bad things, you know.”

“I need to always keep going to have this privilege. And then, the pressure, I think, is amazing. This big club. I have, like, a huge national team to play also. And then, I feel, every single day, more adapted to these kind of things.”

“So, I will try my best every day. I will try to continue to act like I am. Help the team. And I think, with everything I continue to do, the other things will come naturally.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Old Trafford.
