Matheuzinho eyes Paulistão semi, dreams of Europe and Brazil call-up

Corinthians take the field this Saturday at 8:30 PM (Brasília time) against Novorizontino at Estádio Doutor Jorge Ismael de Biasi, in a single match valid for the semifinals of the Campeonato Paulista. One of the team's starters, Matheuzinho, highlighted that the squad's goal is to maintain their streak of state titles.

“We have a single objective, which is to win back-to-back championships. So we’re going to have to overcome all adversities and go after the title,” he stated.

The right-back has played 122 matches for the club since he was signed at the beginning of 2024. During this period, he won the Campeonato Paulista and the 2025 Copa do Brasil, as well as the 2026 Supercopa do Brasil. In the Supercopa final against Flamengo, the player recalled the mindset adopted before the match.

“I knew that if we became champions, the status of Corinthians, of our squad, would change. Because not just any team can beat Flamengo, let alone win a final, win a title over them. So I had to somehow get this across to them, because it was what I was feeling. And, thank God, it worked out perfectly,” he declared.

In addition to his current moment at the club, the number 2 also commented on his individual goals. Among them is the possibility of wearing the Brazilian National Team jersey, even while recognizing the current World Cup cycle scenario.

“I say it’s a goal, a dream I have, to wear the National Team jersey. And I know that today it’s very difficult because the cycle is already coming to an end, since there’s only this and one more call-up before the World Cup. But hope is the last thing to die. I say my focus is 100% on Corinthians. And if that call-up comes, it’s a reflection of what I’m giving here. So, I just think about doing my best here, so that if it happens, it’s a good consequence. I think it’s the peak for a player to be called up to the national team, to be called up for a World Cup,” he said.

With a contract until December 31, 2028, Matheuzinho was the target of inquiries from abroad in the last transfer window. The board chose to keep him in the squad. The player stated that playing in Europe is part of his career goals.

“Of course, I do have a dream of going to Europe, because it’s a goal. Today, everyone knows that Brazilian football is growing more and more, but Europe is the highest level of football, for a player. So that’s how I see it, but right now my mind is completely here at Corinthians. And I know that if one day I get to Europe, it will be a consequence. I really like the Premier League and La Liga, both of them, but there are other leagues where the football is very competitive too. But I think those two are the biggest,” he stated.

The right-back also emphasized his goal and the moment he is experiencing at the club.

“I do have a goal. Of course, I’m very happy here. What I’m experiencing here is extraordinary, the best moment of my career, both as a person and as a player. I’ve matured a lot here at the club. So, I have a great affection. I already had a great affection for Corinthians, and for everything I’m experiencing here, for the titles, the matches, the confidence that has returned, I have eternal gratitude,” he concluded.
