Matheuzinho frustrated by defeat, welcomes Copa do Brasil break

On a rather uninspired afternoon, Corinthians were defeated by Ceará 1-0 at the Neo Química Arena last Sunday (9th), in the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship. After the match, right-back Matheuzinho analyzed Timão’s performance and said the team was frustrated with the final result, as there had been high expectations before the game.

“We were doing very well. The goal was a blow to our team. We ended up having our goal disallowed and then we conceded. It’s hard to talk about because it was a really tough game, since their team didn’t come out to play, they didn’t work the ball.”, began the number 2 in an interview in the stadium’s mixed zone.

“We tried to force it a lot and ended up giving them the counterattack, which was exactly what they wanted. But that’s it, we have to learn from our mistakes, because it’s a mistake we can make, but there’s a right time for everything. Unfortunately, we made the mistake at the wrong time and they ended up taking the win.”, he continued.

“We had really high expectations for this match and for a win, knowing that if we won, we’d be higher up in the table. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way we expected.”, Matheuzinho added.

The right-back also looked ahead to the rest of the season and valued the break the squad will have during the FIFA international window to correct their mistakes. Corinthians are preparing to face rivals São Paulo in the next round of the Brasileirão.

“It’s a tough game, and it will be hard to act. But we have this FIFA break to clear our heads, because physically we’re going to train a lot, we’re going to give our all, we know it’s the last break for the rest of the season, and it’s going to be a very important final stretch to achieve the goals we have in mind.”, he said.

“We have a few days now to rest and a few more days to work. It’s definitely a very important game for us, because we know it’s a derby, it’s important for us. So we’re going to train hard to be as ready as possible.”, the player continued.

Matheuzinho also pointed out that the team needs to string together a series of results to make up for points lost in winnable games throughout the Brasileirão.

“I think the only way to recover is by winning. Of course, there are key games we ended up losing, maybe due to our own carelessness, but I think today was a game where we could have tried until 9 or 10 at night and, unfortunately, the ball just wasn’t going to go in. Those games where you can try and nothing works out.”, he began.

“We even scored, but it was disallowed. So, we just have to focus on evolving as a team, improving our football, focusing on ourselves, analyzing the opponent, and if we keep that in mind, we’ll advance in our development.”, the right-back concluded.

Corinthians’ number 2 also spoke about the impact that poor results in the Brasileirão could have on the Copa do Brasil, a competition in which the club is in the semifinals. Matheuzinho highlighted the difference between the competitions and the attention Timão needs to have.

“It’s hard to say, we take it game by game, but I think this team has shown that we know how to handle knockout competitions very well, because we know those are games where you can’t make mistakes. If we make a mistake, we end up eliminated.”, he commented.

“So maybe, I think we make a lot of mistakes in the Brasileirão, which is a process where we know that, maybe in the next opportunity, we can recover lost points, but not in the Copa do Brasil, because it’s a knockout game. If we slip up, we’re out.”, the player added.

Although he analyzed the knockout competition, Matheuzinho emphasized that the team’s focus right now should be the Brazilian Championship. The right-back pointed out that the squad can’t hold back in the final stretch of the league just because they’re thinking about the knockout tournament.

“I really focus on today. I have to give my all today. Of course, now we have 10 days off, but if there was a game on Wednesday, I’d be thinking about the Wednesday game, because I think there’s basically a month left until the Copa do Brasil.”, he said.

“Of course, we never want to get injured, but we have to focus on today, because if we completely abandon the Brasileirão, a disaster could happen. So, 100% focus on the Brasileirão. Like I said, we’re lucky to have a break now to rest our heads, knowing that a very long, very important stretch is coming for our results.”, the defender concluded.

Matheuzinho and the rest of the Corinthians squad will now have ten days to prepare for their next match. On November 20th, a Thursday, at 7:30 PM (Brasília time), the Alvinegro Paulista will host São Paulo at the Neo Química Arena for the 34th round of the Brazilian Championship.
